INTERNS

MISSION

The goal of the ELM internship is to provide individuals with hands-on experience in the field of Early Childhood.   Interns will work and develop relationship with the classroom teachers, directors, interns and ELM personnel.   The collaboration promotes and enhances emergent literacy in pre-k classrooms.   It is our expectation that the Classroom Teacher and Intern will learn from each other through the process of planning and implementing literacy focused activities in the classroom.  

The primary role of the intern is to assist the Classroom Teacher with consistent, daily integration of ELM strategies into curriculum.  

What does an ELM Internship involve?

  • An intern must be enrolled at Hillsborough Community College and in good academic standing with the college.
  • An intern must be in Practicum 1 - 2 or successfully completed at least 2 Early Childhood Education classes at Hillsborough Community College.
  • Interns are in our program should have an interest in Early Childhood and want to gain knowledge outside the standard HCC classroom.
  • The ELM program is a paid internship (maximum 220 hours per semester).
  • An intern is assigned to several ELM classrooms by the Intern Coordinator.
  • Interns will be actively involved with the classroom teacher in the planning and implementation of literacy activities.
  • The presence of an intern provides critical support for the classroom so literacy activities can be implemented on a daily basis.
  • The ELM internship is a professional program and interns are expected to represent the ELM program with professionalism at all times.

 

 

What an Internship--Is Not

  • An intern will not function as a substitute teacher in the event of a teacher's absence.
  • Interns may not be left alone with the children for any reason.
  • Interns should not be asked to speak to parents regarding a child's behavior, an incident, or developmental issues.
